Aloette May Be Gaining on Mary Kay
One way to fill a need in the marketplace is to look at what larger companies are doing wrong, improve on it and tell people.
Aloette Cosmetics has come into the direct selling world with a couple of unique ideas:
- TV advertising via infomercials - I saw a 30 minute program on cable recently about the Aloette product line. They sold an introductory package at a discount. I assume (and hope) that Aloette will limit the number of these programs and then assign the new customers to one of their direct selling associates (to service).
- Aloette says no to "front end loading". They stock, pack and deliver the products right to your customers, unlike some cosmetics companies that require up front purchase of products.
It's true, if you can improve upon a shortcoming of a competitor and get the word out you have an insurance policy for an increase in sales. Anything you can do to show you are a step ahead leads to a better image and higher sales.
