The Monster - DVD Monster
DVD Monster burst on the MLM scene on January 30th, 2004, promising a unique opportunity to make money in the movie business by selling DVD's through a Network Marketing compensation plan. Sadly, within the first 6 weeks the incredible pricing jumped 20-25% and the fair compensation planned changed into a plan that would pay virtually nothing for product sales and downline sales.
I ran some figures on the DVD Monster compensation plan. If you have $1,000 in retail sales and $10,000 in sales on each of your 7 levels, you make $750. $750 bonus on $71,000 in Volume!
There is another compensation plan included with DVD Monster and it is basically a binary recruiting scheme.
DVD Monster had the chance to make me a big fan, if they had kept the pricing in line with Amazon and Wal-Mart and rewarded folks for retail sales. Instead they have fallen right back in line with the status-quo MLM that gives the industry a bad name.
The owners and hype artists that are pushing this plan should be ashamed of themselves.

Would you care to speculate on why this happened with Monster DVD?

I suspect that the margins in DVDs are pretty tight, however this is more a matter of moving the bonus money around. DVD Monster has a lucrative bonus payout, (binary plan), for those who recruit a bunch of people that sign up and place one order. In my opinion it's a scheme.
If the right company was behind a DVD MLM plan, I believe it would work. The right company being Ingrahm Micro, the largest distributor of DVDs worldwide.
I think this company had 3 weeks of loss leaders that helped bring in roughly 5,000 people and then raised the pricing and overhauled the compensation plan from what was originally presented.
It appears to be a classic bait and switch.

Interesting...I just ran across a guy on my business network who is selling for this company. I'm guessing he may not have been told anything that you have posted here.
