Pampered Chef Pampers Second Harvest Food Bank

Last September, an empty Wal-Mart in Baker, just outside of Baton Rouge, became the world's largest food bank, the biggest in the history of food banking. Through its two loading docks, a half-million pounds of food a day moved to hurricane-stricken southern Louisiana.Advertisement The food that moved through there and other Louisiana food banks came from all over the country, from the largest and smallest food processors, from donors of all kinds. A 7-year-old girl in Chicago raised $17 selling her toys. Movie star John Travolta flew in food and water on his private jet. Food drives were held in cities across the nation. It was a miracle of charity, courtesy of the local and national network of America's Second Harvest. Second Harvest does not have the highest of profiles in disaster relief. It doesn't have big logos on its trucks, or lots of labels on the food it delivers. It just gets food and moves it to where it's most needed.

Home Is Where the Sales Are

In 1993, Terri Newberry, 43, was looking for a way to earn extra income without having to put her kids in day care. When a friend told her about direct-sales company The Pampered Chef, Newberry decided to look into it.
She learned that the more than 70,000 Pampered Chef consultants worldwide sell the company's line of cooking products to consumers in their homes, at friendly gatherings called cooking shows. She also heard that her $100 startup investment could yield hundreds per month in income, so she decided to try it out.
During her first month as a Pampered Chef consultant, Newberry held five cooking shows and made $502. By her fourth month, she made $1,000. "The business grew much faster than I expected," she says. In 2005, her income from Pampered Chef demonstrations was $118,000, or nearly $10,000 a month, and she is now an executive director, a position for the company's top-performing consultants.
The key to Newberry's success is discipline, she says. "Direct sales is an industry that anyone can try, but not everyone can be successful in. Some people need someone telling them what to do," and that doesn't happen in a direct-sales business.
To keep her business on track, Newberry typically works from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. four or five days a week, plus a couple of nights a week.
Although The Pampered Chef specializes in selling cookware, Newberry doesn't believe you need to be a gourmet chef to be successful. You do, however, need to be passionate about what you're selling, whether it's cookware, cleaning products or makeup.

Pampered Chef creator opens new UI building

Doris Kelley Christopher, a 1967 graduate of the University, created the Pampered Chef, Ltd., a company that allows people to sell kitchen utensils to their friends, out of her basement 25 years ago. Dr. Laurie Kramer, professor in the Department of Human and Community Development, said that Christopher first donated money to the University in 2000 to begin the Pampered Chef Family Resiliency Program. This program provides funding for faculty endowments, graduate fellowships and a lecture series providing education to the public about strengthening families.
"She had very fond memories of her time at the University of Illinois, and Bevier Hall in particular, and felt strongly about finding an appropriate way to give back," said Kramer, director of the program. "And she's done that in many magnificent ways.
"The success of the program gave cause for Christopher and her husband Jay to increase their gift to the University, with the donation of $10 million for the new building that will house the Pampered Chef Family Resiliency Program, among others.
"One of the reasons that she donated this building was that she wanted all the faculty in human development and family studies to basically be in the same place so we could work more effectively with one another," Kramer said, explaining the former facilities in Bevier Hall and the Child Development Laboratory were not ideal for the program.
Diane Marlin, coordinator of the Pampered Chef Family Resiliency program, said the building itself cost $8.5 million, with the remaining $1.5 million to be used as an endowment for maintenance that will generate funds that will help maintain specialized areas of the building including the labs, audio/visual equipment and the adjoining family resiliency research home.
