New Book Tells What't Not Working in Network Marketing

Fed up with the often nonsense trainings and practices of network marketing, Canadian business owner and author Rob Toth has released a new book (currently available in digital format) examining what isn't working about the profession.

Network marketing is a distribution and marketing model that has been around for over 50 years. In theory, the manufacturer of a certain product, or the provider of a given service (the network marketing parent company) offers a financial incentive to their customers in order to encourage word of mouth referrals for their product or service.


By allowing their most satisfied and excited customers to keep a portion of the sales revenue that they generate from their conversational marketing (recommendations), the advertising messages reach a targeted and attentive audience (friends and family of the excited customer). This creates better sales conversions and more excited customers and continues the cycle... while also providing a small income stream for the referring agent (the original customer).

I've watched new releases such as the Passion, Children's titles (because I have 4 of them) such as Jimmy Newtron's Power Hour, and Oldies such as Grease. Movies come nicely packaged in mailers and can be returned in the postage paid mailer. Turn around time is 1-2 days from the time the DVD is shipped. It (the movies) can be tracked on the Gold Entertainment website.

XS Energy Drink from Quixtar

I had a friend give me a Citrus Blast XS Energy Drink, from Quixtar. I thought it was pretty good and it didn't have any carbs so I imagine this would be a great product to retail considering the Atkin's Diet Craze.

In my opinion most Quixtar products are next to impossible to sell at the retail pricing. I also find that most people who do any significant retail volume do not charge retail prices but rely solely on the volume bonus to make a profit.

So here comes XS Energy Drink; competitively priced and market relevant. A home run right?

Let's take a look at the numbers:
XS Energy Drink (1 Case - 12 Cans)
List Price: $23.99
Your Price: $20.40
PV/BV: 7.54/20.40

The retail profit on 1 Case of XS Energy Drink is $3.59 or 15%. If you are 100PV in Quixtar, (keep in mind you would have to sell 14 cases of XS Energy Drink to move 100PV), you would make another 3% of $20.40 or $0.61. Total profit on a case of XS Energy Drink if you are at the 100PV level is $4.20 or 17.5%.

Even people in the e-commerce field will tell you that operating on a 17.5% Gross Profit Margin is tough. Let's look at how competitive the product really is.

If Quixtar IBOs want to compete they would have to drop the price by $2.00, thus leaving the Gross Profit at $2.20 or roughly 8%.

Speaking strictly from a product standpoint, I like the taste and the fact that it has no carbs, it's too bad most of the sales of this product will be to folks that are already involved with Quixtar itself.

Peru Dark Roast Coffee from Coffeefair

A reader sent me a pound of Coffeefair's Peru Dark Roast Coffee and being from Seattle, the home of Starbucks, I love coffee. The Coffeefair coffee came as whole beans, packed in the usual airtight coffee bag. When I opened the bag, the beans smelled wonderful and appeared to be very fresh and moist.

I'm not sure if a coffee grinder is standard issue in today's kitchen, but I happen to have one, even though I usually have Starbucks grind my coffee for me. The first thing I noticed about the bag is the lack of instructions, so I followed my Starbucks instructions and used 2 tbsp. of ground coffee to 6 fl. oz. of water.

Another thing I noticed about the bag is that it does not have any way to re-close the coffee after opening. Coffee of this quality can go bad quickly if not kept in an airtight environment.

I liked the taste of the coffee, although I found it to be a bit bland for a dark roast. Later when reading the description of the coffee online, I found it to be described perfectly.

"Peru Dark Roast captures the lush flavor of this expressive coffee from an exotic place. The dark roasting perfects a smooth, smoky flavor, without the burnt or bitter overtones that spoil so many others."

The Peru Dark Roast is not a bold coffee. While it's appearance is dark, the flavor is smooth. I would rate the taste a step below Starbucks, although certainly in the same ballpark, while the quality of the beans appears to be comparable with the best coffees on the market. Overall, it was good coffee.

The price of Coffeefair's Dark Peru Roast is $15.97 plus $5.43 shipping and handling, for a total of $21.40 for the one pound bag. In comparison, Starbucks Yukon Blend, which I found to be a similar coffee sells for $9.95.
