Dick Devos Tax Proposal

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos' assertion that he'd eliminate personal property taxes on businesses dropped a $1.7-billion bomb on the fractious election-year issue of taxes and state spending.

DeVos' remarks during Tuesday's debate with Gov. Jennifer Granholm furthered his support for a drastic overhaul of business taxes, compared to Granholm's more measured approach.

He also piqued concern among schools and local governments, which rely on personal property taxes.

Amway Letting Employees Define the Company in Ads

Amway is running ads in the state's three largest television markets, trying to bolster the company's public image. The spots show Amway employees speaking positively about the company.

"Since it's a name that is getting talked about by a lot of people this year, we wanted people who work here to define the company," said Rob Zeiger, a spokesman for Amway parent, Alticor Inc.

Zeiger says the spots were the company's idea and were not discussed with the DeVos campaign, something campaign Spokesman John Truscott confirms.

We showed the ads to political pollster Ed Sarpolus, who is the vice president of EPIC-MRA.

Amway Running Ads to Boost Moral at Corporate

Amway Corporation has begun running T-V ads saying the company is a great place to work.

The ads are running less than a week after Governor Granholm criticized G-O-P opponent Dick DeVos for laying off Michigan workers and adding workers in China while he was president of Amway.

Alticor, Amway's parent company, says on its blog that it's running the ads because Amway workers feel like they're under attack.

The ads could give a boost to DeVos, who headed the direct sales marketing company from 1993 through 2002.

Fred Wertheimer of the campaign watchdog group Democracy 21 says its unusual to see a company so identified with a candidate run ads of its own.

A DeVos campaign spokesman says there's no coordination between the campaign and Amway on the ads.

Amways DeVos Battle it Out With Governer Granholm

Gov. Jennifer Granholm and her Republican challenger, Dick DeVos, lobbed mid-range bombs at Saturday's Democratic and Republican state conventions -- each accusing the other of being a job-killer.At the GOP convention at Novi's Rock Financial Showplace -- largely a ceremonial gathering, since the slate of statewide candidates was determined in advance -- DeVos told 3,000 of the party faithful that he has the experience needed to turn around Michigan's limping economy."I like Gov. Granholm. Many of us like Gov. Granholm," said DeVos, a 50-year-old millionaire whose Grand Rapids-based family helped build the Amway direct-marketing empire."She's a nice person and a gifted communicator, but you have to judge a governor not on what they say but what they do and what they get done. Frankly and tragically for the citizens of Michigan, the results speak for themselves."Contrasting his business experience with the background of Granholm, an attorney, DeVos noted that there is "only one candidate in this race who has ever run a manufacturing company.

Amway India Update

What a roller-coaster ride it has been! When direct selling company Amway entered India in 1998, it established its first warehouse in Nagpur thinking the city would become the hub for its distribution system. The logic: it was located at the centre of India! As orders started collapsing under the weight of deadlines, the company ‘fixed’ the strategic error by expanding its base. Error of judgments, like these, were not uncommon during the first flush of liberalisation when a bevy of MNC brands—with inadequate homework, deep pockets and visions of quick turnaround times— strutted into India.

80% of Alticor - Amway Overseas, Quixtar "Flat to Down"

As recently as the late 1980s, direct-sales giant Amway Corp. did 80 percent of its business in the United States and the remaining 20 percent overseas. But its aggressive expansion in recent years into such markets as China, India and Russia has flipped those figures around: Now $4 out of every $5 of the company's revenue comes from foreign countries.

"Our whole concept of person-to-person selling is a concept that fits right into the culture in Asia, so we've been able to take that original model and move it into some of those markets," says Steve Van Andel, chairman of Alticor Inc.

Alticor was formed in October 2000 during a corporate restructuring to serve as a holding company for Amway, which now handles foreign sales, and Quixtar Inc., a Web-based business through which domestic sales are made.
