This summer, Pembroke's leftover inventory included a bulky printing press, a spare door, and tools that were used in shop classes decades ago. The question was, what to do with the stuff? Alan E. Peterson, Pembroke's director of school buildings and grounds, turned to the popular Internet auction site.
Peterson teamed up with a seasoned eBay seller who photographed and posted the items for sale, and oversaw the online auctions. When the last auction ended Aug. 19, they'd sold almost everything -- and added a few thousand dollars to the school's coffers.
''We had a number of bids on items," said Peterson. ''We got $2,000 for the printing press. That was huge."
Pembroke joins a growing number of schools and colleges that are catching on and tapping into the lucrative world of online auctions.
