'Volcano Advisory' Issued for Mount St. Helens

Mt. St. Helens Update: September 29th, 2004 11:15AM PDT

Breaking News from KIRO TV Channel 7 in Seattle:

MOUNT ST. HELENS, Wash. -- Geologists have raised the alert level at Mount Saint Helens to a "volcano advisory," the second highest warning of a possible eruption.

Geologists holding a news conference in Vancouver, Wash., said the likelihood of an eruption has increased.

Earlier, scientists said the lava dome in Mount St. Helens' crater apparently is growing, possibly a new sign of an impending eruption.

Mt. St. Helens

I have seen a big jump in traffic for this blog due to the recent "activity" at Mt. St. Helens. Over the summer, I took my family on a trip to the mountain and toured the eruption site. It was a great experience and you can read about it and view some pictures here.

Sept. 29, 2004 — Mount St. Helens, a volcano that devastated swathes of the Northwest when it erupted 24 years ago, has rumbled back to life, raising fears of a fresh explosion, seismologists said Monday.

Experts believe that a sudden and potentially dangerous event could be on the way after a wave of nearly 100 small earthquakes began hitting the area in the states of Washington and Oregon in recent days.

The Popcorn Guy

I have a new title at my daughter's school. I am still Emma's Dad to most of her classmates and friends, but now I have another title. I have helped make and sell popcorn at my daughter’s school once or twice a month for the last couple of years and this year I am chairperson of the Popcorn/Treat committee.

I don't know if the teachers got together and told all of their students that as committee chair, I needed a new title, or if my new power simply resonates as I perform my Popcorn and Treat duties, but I am now known as the "Popcorn Guy".

What I love most about being the Popcorn Guy is the look on the kid’s faces when they see me and realize that I am the guy that gives them a bag of popcorn for 25 cents. For some reason, this makes them very happy. Seeing 300 kids smile on a Friday afternoon makes the Popcorn Guy very happy as well.

I highly recommend the popcorn job. Very little responsibility, high reward.

More on Engaging vs. Interupting

Last month I made a post titled Engaging vs. Interrupting that talked about the difference between engaging people in a dialogue vs. interupting when marketing a product or business.

Here is a snip from a wonderful post at QuixtarBlog titled, Joe Trippi Gets It:

The primary message of Trippi's essay is that the Internet (and specifically bloggers) is disrupting the status quo, in both politics and information distribution, while putting more power into the hands of the people. This is a message that many of the existing power brokers (Global PACs, Mega-Corps, Big Media, etc.) have trouble comprehending.

Unfortunately, most are still trying (desperately) to manage, control and direct the conversations instead of simply participating. Such efforts have given birth to the corporate blog, the "trendy" email newsletter and discussion board marketing which all still work to control (or at least influence) the conversations.

Trippi (who managed Howard Dean's presidential campaign) decided to join the conversations as a participant. He genuinely embraced the "market of opinion" instead of trying to control it and you know what? It worked. He understood that a successful conversation combines speaking with listening. He "gets it." Do you get it? Does your business?
