U2, Iraq, Human Rights, and the One Campaign

As Bono from U2 was making a connection between the 1948 Declaration of Human Rights and the One Campaign, my mind drifted to Iraq.

I'm not 100% sure that we went into Iraq with all of the information we should have but I get the feeling that anti-Iraq-war protesters have selective memory when it comes to human rights in Saddam's Iraq.

As promised, here is article 1 from the Declaration of Human Rights:

Article 1.

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

After living in the United States for 35 years, roughly half of that time attending school, it took a U2 concert to alert me to this 1948 declaration:

On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the full text of which appears in the following pages. Following this historic act the Assembly called upon all Member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration and "to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."

PREAMBLE

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

Legally Filling My iPod - Napster v. iTunes

I have been trying to figure out how to legally fill my iPod with music for the least amount of money. First I tried Napster and then settled on Apple iTunes.

Here is the scoop:

Napster is not compatible with an iPod, but they claim that millions of songs are burned onto  CD's and then loaded into iPods. They are advertising "never pay 99 cents a track again", but when you go to burn the songs on a CD, they charge you 99 cents a song. I have to say that I like the Napster interface and search much better than iTunes, but it's too much of a pain to move the songs from Napster to my iPod.

iTunes could learn a thing or two from Napster's interface. On Napster, I was able to search for a song and then search for artists in the same genre, there is no such search on iTunes.

I ended up downloading 22 songs from iTunes, uploading a Marshill Worship 1 CD into my iTunes library, and then some other MP3's that I had saved on my hard drive from my church, live worship music stuff. I now have 45 songs or about 3 hours worth of music and it cost me a little more than 20 bucks and I was able to load it onto my wife's iPod as well.

Muslim and Christian Perspective on Terri Schiavo

My pastor, Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, Washington writes a column for The Seattle Times. He and several other religion writers were asked to consider  issues of faith in the Terri Schiavo case.

Q: What would you do if you were making the decision in Terri Schiavo's case?

A: The majority of Muslims in America believe her life should be saved, and perhaps doctors should reinsert the feeding tube. We must remember she is not dead, and that God and the U.S. Constitution give her the right to live.

Muslims generally believe a sick person should patiently endure the pain and pray to Allah that if he or she is patient, there will be a great reward and blessing for them in the eternal life.

Q: What would you do if you were making the decision in Schiavo's case, and to what extent is this decision driven by what your faith says on end-of-life issues?

A: First, Terri was created by God with inherent worth and could live except for her inability to swallow food and water. Second, to me Terri's feeding tube is no more of an extraordinary life-saving measure than a spoon held by a caregiver providing food and water to someone who is disabled or elderly. Third, her parents want to care for her and I believe Terri's wishes are unknown. Fourth, the Bible forbids taking an innocent human life, and Terri has committed no crime deserving a torturous death by dehydration. Fifth, Terri's husband should not be her legal guardian because they have not lived together since 1990, and he is in effect married to his girlfriend, with whom he has two children and has lived since 1995.

Therefore, I would preserve Terri's life so long as extraordinary measures were not required to sustain it.
